The beauty of democracy is only witnessed when democracy is being staged in its true blue essence, and it seems that the curtain has opened, and Australia is playing this play very well. We are constantly hearing stories of corrupt politicians, who are using their power for their personal benefit, but here we have Mr. Rudd, who is asking politicians to freeze their pay. Although most of the politicians are complaining, (as it’s hard to understand why, as they earn 6 digit incomes and have an increase of 7% per year,) I think it’s a step towards the meaning of democracy…. which essentially means, power to the people, not power to the few who have good campaign headlines, and speak of representation but do the opposite.
Mr. Rudd not only suggested this superb idea, he also went through with many of his main election promises. We can rarely say this about many other politicians. He ratified the Kyoto Protocol within a few days, said “SORRY” to the stolen generation, and he’s only been in his position for less than 100 days.
I just wanted to dedicate this post to Kevin Rudd, and I hope there’s many other leaders who do as he did. Which, in reality, it’s not difficult… to do as one says…
Ernest Gaines sums it up perfectly:
““Words mean nothing. Action is the only thing. Doing. That’s the only thing.”
